Unlocking the Power of Human-AI Collaboration

In many "human" tasks, such as medical diagnosis, language translation, and customer service, artificial intelligence is gradually improving fast. Due to this, there are legitimate concerns that AI will eventually supplant human jobs across the economy. However, that is not the most likely or even the inevitable consequence.

According to study conducted by Harvard Business Review involving 1,500 companies, businesses see the most performance gains when people and machines collaborate. Humans and AI actively build upon each other's complementing qualities through such collaborative intelligence.

In order to fully benefit from this cooperation, businesses must comprehend how humans can best complement machines, how machines can enhance what humans do best, and how to adapt business processes to support the collaboration.

People must initially learn to assign jobs to the new technology, just as how doctors entrust computers to read X-rays and MRIs. As in robot-assisted surgery, employees should be able to mix their unique human skills with those of a smart machine to produce greater results than each could provide on their own. To function effectively within AI-enhanced processes, employees must be able to train intelligent agents new abilities and undergo training themselves.

The message is clear: Businesses that only employ automation to replace workers will not realize the full potential of AI. Instead, those who embrace collaborative intelligence and revolutionize their businesses, markets, industries, and—no less important—their workforces will be tomorrow's leaders.
